My name is Domino, and I have been in the game for close to 30 years, either in radio, the club/bar scene, mobile parties, or for self-enjoyment. I even tinkered in producing. I started working at WTSR (Trenton State Radio), learning the alternative scene with the legendary Turn Table Tom, which was only 16 years old and was the mainstay on Saturday nights and the hook up for City Gardens before the concerts.
TT would have me do my thing every week for a half-hour, where I introduced new dance music to a crowd that despised that music, but I won them over because it wasn't mainstream. Later, due to Tom's influence and an open spot during the summer, they gave me my show and was so popular the PD could not stand it eventually threw me off the air.
I found my niche in having an ear for hits and later learning how to read a crowd and controlling the party. For most of my career, I was a party jock, and I would challenge other jocks because I felt my venue was more challenging to maintain a crowd for the night.
My first bar was a heavy metal and classic rock joint; the funny thing was I didn't know that genre; I was a disco boy and needed to adapt and learn that scene. I ended up maintaining two of the most notorious bars, The Buffstone and The Sportsman Pub. The secret of my success was in learning my crowd, knowing there are 10 and 20 songs on an album besides the hits, and taking risks but not going over the comfort level of the venue.
I always felt the man or woman behind the turntables is like the drummer in a rock and roll band; everyone knows them but know them. If they were a guitar player or lead singer, people would spool all kinds of oddities out about them. If you look at it, the DJ is the party without them. It would be crickets. That is the inspiration of this site to learn more about the driving force of your reality escape.
